Blackfalds will Light Up for 2020!
Blackfalds, Alberta (November 20, 2020) – For 14 years, Blackfalds has kicked off the holiday season by hosting the annual Light Up Blackfalds event welcoming residents, visitors, and, on occasion, Mr. & Mrs. Claus to join in on the celebration.
Due to the coronavirus pandemic's ever-changing situation and to keep staff and the public safe and healthy, Town Administration decided to cancel the official Light Up Blackfalds event and instead provide a winter wonderland for families and friends to go to at their own leisure. Even though there may not be hot chocolate, carolers, and dance performances, Ol' St. Nick, or games, there will be music, lights, and a joyous holiday feeling for all to enjoy.
"Each year, I see more families walking through our winter wonderland - laughing, joking, and enjoying the lights and the music. This year will be no different," shared Mayor Richard Poole. "This year our families will appreciate, more than ever, the park's beauty and the opportunity it gives us to put aside the year's many challenges in exchange for the love of family and friends. It is my sincerest hope that we can all celebrate the Christmas season as safely as possible in the best town in Alberta."
“We are grateful that Stantec is once again supporting this center of attraction for our community,” he added.
Shaun Knowles, Parks Operator III and creative mind behind Light Up Blackfalds said that he and his family look forward to this season more than most and always attend the event. Regardless of what the season will look like, they are excited to continue their tradition.
"In the season that we have had this year, with everything being so different, it's nice to have some normalcy; having lights at Christmas time is a big part of the enjoyment of the season. I get comments upon comments just as we're setting the park up about how excited the community is," said Knowles.
It is estimated that this year there will be 120,000 bulbs involved in the décor – all programmed differently each year, thanks to the talents and vision of Knowles.
"I'm proud to announce that we will light up the park this evening, and the show will run from November 20 to January 7. Every year our staff does a wonderful job on the park, and having our own Clark Griswold [Knowles] on the team sure makes a difference, as you can see every year," said Community Services Director Sean Barnes. "If you're planning to come out, please make sure to social distance as best you can, wear a mask if you cannot, and enjoy the spirit of Tayles Park for your Christmas holidays."
The holiday season schedule begins Friday, November 20, and is as follows:
Monday to Sunday | 5:00 pm until Dawn
Sunday to Thursday | 6:00 to 8:00 pm
Friday and Saturday | 6:00 to 9:00 pm
