Blackfalds Implements Moderate Tax Increase of 0.6%

Blackfalds, Alberta (April 30, 2021) – As the Town of Blackfalds enters a second year of operations during the coronavirus pandemic, Council and Administration remain committed to alleviating some of the financial strain on taxpayers by implementing a 0.6% tax rate this year, a moderate increment after a 0% increase in 2020.

“Administration is happy to have found the required cutbacks to reduce the property tax increase down from 1.5% to 0.6% without any major service interruptions,” according to Director of Corporate Services Justin de Bresser. “The pandemic is still having a major effect on the municipality’s revenues and operations, and Administration is proceeding with the utmost caution for the remainder of the year.”

Mayor Richard Poole acknowledged that he and Council are aware of the challenges that the past year has brought to the community.

“The 0.6% increase was an alternative that Council overwhelmingly supported because it acknowledges how the events of the past year have affected our citizens needs, the Town of Blackfalds’ loss of revenue, and the increase in cost of living,” he explained.

Mayor Poole added that Council has also worked with Administration to provide support for the business community through utility payment and tax penalty deferrals, as well as business licence credits. Anyone wishing to take advantage of these opportunities should contact the Town to find out how to qualify for these adjustments.

Property Tax notices will be sent out on the first week of May when residents and businesses are given 60 days to file any assessment complaints.
