Blackfalds High School Becomes Wolf Creek Public Schools’ Top Priority
Blackfalds, Alberta (July 18, 2019) – The Wolf Creek Public Schools’ (WCPS) Board of Trustees revised its three year capital plan, with a new Grade 7 to 12 school for Blackfalds as its top capital priority.
“This is an exciting development, one we have been working towards for many years,” noted Mayor Richard Poole, adding, “Blackfalds appreciates the continued effort of the Wolf Creek School Board as they work with all communities in their district. With Blackfalds’ continuing growth, this school will help to meet the needs and demands of students and their families in this progressive town.”
Blackfalds is home to three Iron Ridge campuses. Iron Ridge Elementary (Pre K – 3), Iron Ridge Intermediate (Grades 4 – 6) and Iron Ridge Junior (Grades 7 – 9) as well as St. Gregory the Great Catholic School (Pre K – Grade 9). Grade 10 - 12 students in Blackfalds are currently bused to Ecole Secondaire Composite High School in Lacombe.
The WCPS’ capital plan comes as a result of extensive and collaborative dialogue with the Town of Blackfalds, which has long advocated for a high school in the community. With its population passing the 10,000 (10,125 according to the 2018 Census) threshold the need is even greater. The Town continues to dedicate its support for growing educational opportunities in its own 10-year capital plan.
The WCPS Board will be working with the Government of Alberta ahead of the provincial budget in the Fall.
