Public Works manages and maintains activities relating to Town-owned buildings, facilities, roadway infrastructures, property and land.

Water Conservation Program:

The Town of Blackfalds will have regional water pipeline from the City of Red Deer by approximately June of 2006, this should alleviate any water shortages for the foreseeable future. Unfortunately until that time the Town is relying on the production of three water wells situated around Blackfalds. We are requesting residence of Blackfalds to voluntary conserve water as much as possible, to ensure there is no shortage of water supply.

Effective June 15, 2005 the watering of lawns and gardens will be restricted on an annual basis, with occupants and owners of even numbered homes be permitted to watering on even numbered days and occupants and owners of odd numbered homes be permitted to water on odd numbered days. Watering of newly laid sod or plantings will not be restricted.

Further Public Works is setting up a three level water conservation program in the Town of Blackfalds to control outside watering. From Level 1 to Level 3: each level becomes more restrictive.

Level 1: Each residence will only be allowed to water twice a week. Odd numbered houses; the residents will be allowed to water Tuesday and Saturday. Even numbered houses; the residents will be allowed to water on Wednesday and Sundays of each week. No outside watering would be allowed the rest of the week. Newly-laid sod or plantings are exempt.

Level 2: Each residence will only be allowed to water once a week during the hours of 7:00 PM to 10:00 PM only. Odd numbered houses; the residents will be allowed to water Tuesday. Even numbered houses; the residents will be allowed to water on Friday. No outside watering would be allowed the rest of the week. Newly-laid sod or plantings may be allowed in exceptional circumstances.

Level 3: No outside watering and non-essential indoor use is allowed. This is in case of a severe shortage and would only be implemented in a severe and long hot spell of weather.

Exception to this conservation program would be new lawns or new plantings, which require moisture on a regular basis in the first two to three weeks.

Please continue to conserve water as we go into the fall and winter period. The Regional Water Line from the City of Red Deer is being constructed and should be completed by later this fall. The connection to the Town's Water Treatment Plant and Reservoir is being completed by GS Holdings within the first week of September, 2005. We are expecting to connect onto the new water pipeline by summer of 2006.

Parking and Truck Routes:

Stantec Consulting Ltd. has completed the 2003 Traffic Study for the Town of Blackfalds. You may purchase a copy at the Town Office for $65.00 or download a copy here (18MB, pdf).

Waste Management Services:

The Town of Blackfalds is encouraging town residents to compost their grass clippings and other garden plantings by using a back yard composter or by using the composting site by the transfer station.

By reducing the amount of material going to the landfill site, this increases the life span of the landfill site.

Waste Management crews are continuing to pickup the garbage containers and the blue box recycling. Please ensure that bags are less then 50 lbs. and containers are clearly marked. If you have any questions please call the Town Office at 885-4677.

In the second week of October, 2005 the Town of Blackfalds crews will again be undertaking "Fall Cleanup". Town Crews will be picking up yard waste, white goods and other miscellaneous items that homeowners want to dispose of.
