Accessory Building
 
1.       When having an accessory Building on my property does it need to have the same exterior as my house?
All accessory buildings must match the exterior of the house.
 
2.       Can I put my accessory building anywhere I choose on my property?
Accessory buildings must be placed a minimum of 1 metre inside all property lines. If you are developing a detached garage it must be placed either 1 metre or 6 metres from the rear property line. If you would like to develop a garage that enters from the side yard of your property please contact our Town office.
 
3.       How high can I build my accessory building?
Your accessory building cannot exceed the height of single family dwelling.
 
4.       Can I build or put an accessory building in my front yard?
Accessory buildings may not be placed in the front yard.
 
ACCESSORY SUITES
 
1.       Can I develop  an accessory suite?
Accessory suites are discretionary uses in the R-1L and R-1M zonings. Applications for accessory suites must be approved by the Municipal Planning Commission.
 
ADDRESS UNSIGHTLY, NUISANCE, ETC.
 
1.       Is there a bylaw that addresses unsightly, nuisance, etc. properties?
 
DECK
 
1.       Do I need a permit to build a deck?
Yes you will need a building and a development permit. If your deck will be enclosed, that is considered an addition to your home and you will need to contact the Town for further details.
 
 
DRIVEWAYS
 
1.       Does my driveway to my garage need to be paved?
If you have an attached or detached garage that enters onto a paved public roadway then your driveway must be paved.
 
FENCE
 
1.       Do I need a permit for a fence?
The construction of a fence does not require a permit as long as it is constructed in accordance to the Town’s Land Use Bylaw.
 
The Bylaw allows a 1 m (3.28ft.) high fence in a front yard and a 2 m (6.56 ft.) fence in side and rear yards.
  
2.       How do I find where my property lines are before constructing my fence?
If you have a Real Property Report you will know where you property lines are or you can rent a metal detector to find your property pins. The Town does not locate your property lines.
 
GARAGE
 
1.       What permits do I need for building a garage?
You will need to fill out a building and development permit.
 
HOME BUSINESS
 
1.       Do I need a permit to operate a business out of my home?
Yes. You will need to fill out a Development Permit Application.  There are two types of home businesses in the Town, Minor and Major. Home Business Minors can be approved by the Planning and Development Officer. Home Business Majors must be approved by the Municipal Planning Commission. Please contact the Town for more information.
 
2.       Do I need a business license for a home business?
Yes. Once you have received an approved development permit for your home business you will be required to purchase a business license through the Town.
 
3.       What happens if I move and relocate my business within the Town?
Development Permits are issued to the land on which the business is occurring. Therefore if you relocate you will be required to re-apply for your business at your new address.
 
SIGNS
 
1.       Do I need a permit for a sign?
You need a permit to have a sign. For further questions please contact the Town.
 
UTILITY LINES
 
1.       How do I know where my utility lines are before I start digging on my property?
You should always call 1-800-242-3447 before you dig on your property to get all utility lines marked.

1.       How do I find out where my zoning is?
