BROCHURE: Information on Reporting a Crime in Blackfalds
The Town of Blackfalds currently employs two (2) Peace Officers appointed by the Solicitor General to enforce local Bylaws and Provincial Law. Our Officers work varied shifts from 7am to 3 am.
The Municipal Enforcement Department is here to protect you, the Town of Blackfalds’ citizens. Their main focus is traffic control and public safety, under Provincial Law. Local Bylaws are addressed by the Officers on a complaint and observance basis. You can fill out an online version of the Public Concern form. A fair measure of their time is spent assisting the RCMP on various calls and traffic control at accidents.
Their shift duties cover: Bylaw compliance, curfew enforcement, removal of inebriated individuals from our streets, impaired drivers, 24 hour suspensions for impairments, child safety, preventative and walk throughs at community functions, loud music and party complaints and RCMP assistance.
Our officers work closely with RCMP in addressing these categories.
Constable Gary Smith has been a Peace Office for 12 years and has been at Blackfalds since January, 2000. He has served six other municipalities, the US Army MPs and the Canadian Army.
His strong message to kids: Be smart, be safe, and wear your bike helmet!! Just say no to drugs!
Constable Shaun Wesolowski attended Medicine Hat College
and received his Police and Security Diploma in 2002. He worked in High Level and Chestermere before coming to Blackfalds as the Town’s second Peace Officer and has been here since December 2006.
Residents should read over two (2) main bylaws;
FAQs:
1) What constitutes Noise or Loud Party?
If music/party can be heard from the sidewalk it is too loud.
If a neighbour says it is disturbing them, it is too loud.
2) Why can’t I have the parking spot in front of my house?
Property ownership does not extend past the sidewalk and the streets are public, therefore it is first come first serve.
3) Why do I have to move my trailer?
The Land Use Bylaw does not allow trailers to be on front lawns except on a Parking Pad. Also cannot be on the street longer than 72 hours and must be hitched to a tow vehicle at all times.
4) Why can’t I drive my quad or dirt bike in town?
There is no Town Bylaw allowing this and Provincial Regulations prohibit their use within Municipal Boundaries and Roadside Ditches.
5) Is my property unsightly?
While it may not appear so to the owner, it appears to be to a Complainant. However, the decision is up to the Investigating Officer, who will explain any improvements required.

TIPS/Advice:
Residents should read over two (2) main bylaws;
1) Community Standards
2) Land Use Bylaw
1) Please obey speed limits, especially in school and playground zones.
2) Remember that U-turns are prohibited on Broadway Avenue between Indiana Street and Waghorn Street. Provincial Law prohibits U-turns at all Intersections.
3) Be aware of all crosswalk areas; children (and adults) don’t always look before stepping off the curb.The fine for failing to stop for a pedestrian in a crosswalk as mandated by Traffic Safety Act is $575.00
4) Be considerate of your neighbours. If you think something isn’t right, or may be altered to suit both parties it is always better to talk with each other first. Sending in a uniformed presence in the beginning tends to escalate bad feelings.
5) License plate Registration renewals are sent out 2 months in advance and may be renewed at anytime during that period. Please do not let your registration lapse – the Provincial fine for having expired license plate on your vehicle is $230.00 and the vehicle could be towed.
